Before I applied to study abroad I had heard people describe this experience as the best experience of their life. The first thing I thought when I heard these declarations was, “that was probably the first time they were away from parental guidance that’s why.”
The past three years I have been living in four different countries and have had to say goodbye to my loved ones so many times. When I came to UNCA, I couldn’t wait for the semester to end. The social life here is so different from back home. I wanted to get back to my friends. It wasn’t the best experience of my life I was waiting for.
Now, 8 months later, I have one more month to spend here and trust me, I don’t want it to end. I want to be able to stay here. During these 8 months I have done my best to take every opportunity UNCA gave me. I have tried so many sports I wasn’t familiar with, I have had the chance to get know-ledge from some amazing professors and I have made some awesome friends.
Traveling has also been a really important part of this experience. I visited: Miami, The Bahamas, New York City, San Francisco, Atlanta and many cities in North Carolina. Actually, next weekend I’m planning to go to Charleston with some friends.
I also got some work experience while at UNCA. I worked at the Math lab last semester as a tutor assistant and this semester I am working as a resident assistant in Mills Hall. I am also doing a virtual internship with Family Newsletter during this semester which has been really helpful with my second major, mass communications.
Something I really want to share with you is that during spring break I went on the Silicon Valley trip the school was organizing. Since I started studying computer science I’ve always imagined myself working for Google and during this trip I got to walk around the Google campus and talk to some of their employees, which was great.
Overall it has been a crazy busy year with a pretty unpleasant sleeping schedule, but it has all been worth it. I have had 8 months filled with great activities, with no time to kill watching TV shows or Facebook stalking people. I can say I have lived every moment at UNCA.
Do not study abroad with the idea that it will be the best experience of your life. It won’t. You have to make it. All the opportunities are there. You just need to STAY ACTIVE, and you’ll never want to leave.
